    Ornamental stones and marbles are often identifiable with the precise geographical area in which the quarries are concentrated and from which they sometimes take their name. In the past, transport difficulties limited their use to local buildings, with the exception of the finest and most precious marbles which found outstanding application in monuments, churches and ancient palaces.
