Urban park/multifunctional center, Monza Municipality
Design study to transform the area of the former Fruit and Vegetable Market of Monza in urban park and multi-functional center for citizens. Historic structures, dating back to early twentieth century and coming from the Turin International Exposition of 1901, have been re-designed to house the e-GOCS (Young now, Citizens forever) and Hub-Young projects, a community center for young people, a physical and virtual place for the social, cultural and professional growth of children. The project involves the construction of new sports facilities, including a skate park, a covered events area, spaces for rehearsals and music production, creative workshops dedicated to graphic arts, study rooms and an exhibition space. Much attention is paid to the redevelopment of outdoor spaces; new pedestrian routes, paving and lighting system aim to transform the abandoned area into an urban garden full of vegetation and activities for the district and the city. Architectural interventions are reduced to the minimum. The project includes the conservation of existing buildings and the current fence with special attention to access points to make the border porous and invite entry. The former covered fruit and vegetable market is recovered as a "zero km" market to sell local agricultural products and food. In the new market it will be possible to buy directly from the producers, who will also be the managers of the facility.
