Urban skin - Solar cells

Urban Skin is a system of photovoltaic solar cells of various sizes and colors, built by matching glass sheets and Sphelar technology. The making of the panels takes advantage from a new type of spherical solar cells that capture the light from all directions. This technology known as the Sphelar (Spherical Solar Cell), is patented by the Japanese Kyosemi Corporation. The process consists in precipitating drops of molten silicon on a glass support. The color of glass  is photostable and opens new possibilities for cladding buildings. The final effect is that of a stained glass panel with micro iridescent spheres inside to be installed as a second skin with metal brackets derived from ventilated facades systems. The structures are invisible because hidden the panels themselves. The project was awarded in the competition "Designers Show", organized in 2010 by the Chamber of Commerce of Monza and Brianza at the Autodromo di Monza.
